3 things that I learned from 2020

Thank You 2020!

I want to share my wisdom and experience regarding my journey in 2020. 2020 was a hard year for me with many ups and downs. One of the greatest things is that I graduated from university and got my Bachelor’s Degree, but because of the pandemic, job vacancies are down and I still haven’t landed a job offer yet. Regarding that situation, I started to see the positive parts of it and it changes my perspective. Here’s what I learned from last year.

Don’t rush things

I have to wait and some things cannot be rushed, such as job offers. While waiting, I tried to fill that time with something productive and fun, such as learning new skills on how to use computer software or even playing a new musical instrument. For me, some of the things that I do is that I deepen my knowledge on using spreadsheet software and I also learn how to play the ukulele in 2020.

Good Decision Making

I can’t make decisions too quickly. Even though the decision looks good in the short term, I should try to think about the long term impact. I need to think about every risk of every possible decision so that the decision taken has the most positive impact, without any regrets at the end of the journey. My real-life example of this lesson is that because I am a fresh graduate, I need to decide what I want to do after I graduated from University. There are many choices that I can do, such as continue my studies for a Masters Degree, or get a job, or open a business. But for me, I tried to get a job because I want to gain experience in a working environment where I put my theory to application and work in a team or individually.

Nothing is Impossible

Doing several things that needed to be outside of your comfort area and require adapting to rapid changes of situations and goals sounds unrealistic at first, but in the end, it will go well. Just add determination and efforts and surely the goals will be reached before you know it. My real-life examples for this experience is that I have to change my undergraduate thesis topic where it is a very different topic that I choose and I have to learn it in a short amount of time, while also I have to learn how to use data processing software for my undergraduate thesis and write the undergraduate thesis itself. I have three responsibilities with a lot of workload at the same time. I even have to face a new problem, wherein the middle of March, I can’t go to the office and have to work at home. In this situation, I have less supervision from my mentor and if I run into some questions, I have to try to find the answer on my own. However, with the helped of my mentors and colleagues and my determination to not give up, I can finish all of the responsibilities. I finally can finish it right on time with a decent score.

I think that is what mainly I learned from last year. Hopefully, this year we can adapt to these changes because of the pandemics. I also hope that my personal experience can give new insight to other people who read this.

Thank you and have a nice day!
